Unfortunately we had to put Sonny down last week. A couple months ago one of his nails on his left back foot fell off. This has happened before, same toe, so we treated it like we did the first one, with some antibiotic spray that the vet gave us. This time though his toe continued to get worse and infected. We took him back to the vet and were told to start soaking his foot in Epson salt daily and bandaging it. The other option was amputation of the toe. We decided to go the soaking/bandaging route but after a few weeks it still didn't show improvement -- actually kept getting worse. We returned to the vet and basically had 2 options, amputation or continue to soak and bandage to just keep the infection from spreading (but only delaying the need for amputation). Amputation was going to run about $2k and Sonny is 11+ years old. Also, the vet said there was a good chance that it was a cancerous mass in his foot which is the root cause of all of this. If that was indeed the case, the cancer would have most likely spread to other parts of his body. Sadly it was time to put Sonny down.
We had Sonny in our family for over 5 years and he was the most loyal, kind dog I have ever met. He had such a gentle spirit and was great with Alex. We will miss him dearly -- he was our first baby. Sonny and Honey are frolicking in doggie heaven.
