Baby Shower

On Saturday, my sister and my mom's good friend, Dianne, hosted a baby shower for me at the Daily Review Cafe. It went really well and the food was delicious. The menu was the following:

Appetizers (both of these were served for the table):
Mediterranean Plate of Hummus, Tabouleh, Israeli Couscous Orzo Salad, Greek Salad and Pita Bread
Tortilla Crusted Shrimp with Guajillo Sauce and Guacamole

Entree:
Grilled Fresh Salmon or Shrimp Tostada with Refried Black Beans, Goat Cheese, Cilantro Cabbage Slaw, Red and Yellow Pepper Coulis and Pico de Gallo
Seafood Cobb Salad of Jumbo Lump Crabmeat, Shrimp, Avocado, Bacon, Tomato, and Queso Blanco on Romaine with Roasted Garlic Chive Dressing
Quiche of the Day served with a choice of Cup of Soup or Small Green Salad
Oven Roasted Mushroom Ravioli Blended Portabella and Crimini with Roasted Garlic, Onions, Parmesan and Mozzarella with Madeira Mushroom Sauce

Dessert:
Chocolate Whiskey Pot de Crème’
Carrot Cake with Cream Icing
Warm Apple Cherry Pecan Crisp A la Mode

The party started at 11 and we just mingled and some had wine until about 11:30. Then we played "The Price is Right" where you had to guess the price of baby staples such as wipes, baby powder, diaper cream, etc.) The person who guessed the closest price on the most items won. My friend Raven was the big winner (she is preggers too and due early November).

After that we sat down and enjoyed our lunch followed by the opening of the gifts. It was so much fun to get showered! I got a lot of cute stuff and a lot of stuff that will be very useful. I am thankful for everyone coming and the gifts everyone gave!

Here are some pics from the day:

Dried Fruit Mix & Max

Yesterday afternoon Ryan and I went to Rachel's house for dinner and to see all her new furniture.  My dad made lasagna that Haley thought was quite delicious and then we tried out her new Zoku popsicle maker.  Works great for juices, not so great for juice with liquor.

When we got home, I noticed the POUND of dried fruit mix that was on the counter was missing and knew Max was the culprit.  Sure enough the package was shredded to pieces in the dining room and all the dried fruit was gone.  I wasn't too worried about Max digesting it all because he has eaten a pound and a half of chicken off the counter before as well as an 8oz. filet mignon raw.  However, I was worried what was going to happen by him ingesting all that fiber (a good portion of the bag was prunes).  I was expecting the worst on his morning run but nothing materialized.  I guess Max just wanted to add some fiber to his diet.  All of the sugar from the fruit did have him bouncing off the walls last night -- he was totally on a sugar rush and super hyper.  Sonny would have been sick as a dog (pun intended) if he had eaten all of that as he definitely has a more sensitive system.

On another note, I had a very lovely shower this weekend.  Rachel and Dianne did a fabulous job.  Next post will be about the shower (with pictures) so stayed tuned!

Pregnant or Handicap?

I feel like some people mistake pregnancy for being handicap.  I have been asked if I can take the stairs, wear heels, go out, listen to loud music, and run.  Um, yes.  While some of those may get more difficult as the pregnancy continues and others are just not as desirable, it doesn't mean I can't do them. Granted most of those questions are from men who don't know better.

I feel like my bump has grown a bit over the last few days.  One thing I love are maternity pants -- they are great.  So so comfortable.  They knock the pants off regular pants.

This weekend my sister and my mom's friend Dianne are throwing me a baby shower at the Daily Review Cafe.  I am excited to see everyone and get showered with gifts!

About 4 months to go!

Hypothyroidism

At my 8 week appointment I had blood work done to check for a ton of different things (all routine).  Turns out they detected that I have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) which means that my thyroid is not producing enough of the hormones.  Having not enough of the hormones includes the following symptoms:

Fatigue, weakness, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, cold intolerance (can't tolerate cold temperatures like those around you), constipation, depression, irritability.

Check, check, check, check...

The #1 symptom I had was fatigue. I basically slept through the first trimester.  I barely made it through the work day only to come home and sleep 10+ hours a night and take naps whenever possible.  Everyone said fatigue comes with pregnancy, but I did not understand how this could be normal.  If I had another kid to watch I could not have done it.

The results of my blood work (which I didn't hear back until a few weeks later) was that my TSH level (thyroid stimulating hormone) was at 5. The TSH is a hormone your body releases to tell your thyroid to release the T3 and T4 hormone.  The higher the TSH level means your body is trying to stimulate your thyroid to release more and more of the hormone that it is under producing.  Having a TSH of 5 is high, but not severe.  The doctor would prefer the level to be around 3.  He prescribed a synthetic hormone replacement, Levothyroxine, at 25mcg.   The catch with this drug is that you have to take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least an hour before breakfast, coffee, etc.  That is hard for me.  Plus you are not to consume food with iron and calcium within 4 hours of taking (which most breakfast food contains).

At my 17 week appointment they tested my thyroid again and the TSH came back at 4 so improvement was made but not yet where it should be.  My dosage was doubled to 50 mcg.  I also talked to the doctor and decided to take the medicine at night at least 2 hours after eating.

On Tuesday at my 20 week appointment they took blood again and my TSH level was back up to a 4.6. My dosage will now be 75mcg.  I hope we can get this under control soon.

Since my TSH level had increased in the past few weeks, I was feeling more tired than I was the previous few weeks (nothing even close to the first trimester) but I really didn't give it any thought that it could be my thyroid causing it again.  I hope 75mcg bring it closer to the target level of 3.

Another thing to note is that I will most likely be on this medicine for the rest of my life.  There is no cure, only treatment for hypothyroidism.  Also, because the symptoms develop slowly over a number of years, this is something that I have had for a while and was not brought on by pregnancy (although pregnancy can exacerbate it).  It is estimated that 2.5% of pregnant women and 10% of women overall have some degree of hypothyroidism.  If left untreated, it does cause developmental delays in the baby.

On a more positive note, at my 17 week appointment they did blood work to test for down syndrome, spina bifida, and other chromosomal abnormalities.  Based on my age alone, my risk for having a child with down syndrome is 1 in 781.  Based on the results of the test, my risk drops to 1 in 10,000.  The test came back negative for everything which is great to know.

Wow, I wrote a short novel here...

It's a BOY!

Mother's intuition was right.  I thought it was a boy (so did the majority of other people) and indeed it is a little boy.  I am glad I can start referring to the baby as "he" and not "it" anymore.  The doctor got such a clear picture of his male parts that he took a picture of it.

We already have a name picked out but everyone will have to wait as we are keeping it a secret!

The doctor said that everything looked perfect and commented several times at how active the baby was which he said is a very healthy thing.  He said I am on track for a 7.5lb baby and he is measuring about 4 days early.  The due date is still 12/27 but 4 days early is Christmas Eve Eve.

Boy or Girl

For those who receive the post via email, you can always go to http://julia-hummer.blogspot.com/ to view the post as well.

Tomorrow afternoon I should be finding out the sex of the baby, if it cooperates this time.  At my last appointment the doctor tried to determine the plumbing, but the baby was not only in a kneeling position but also had its legs crossed.

Most people have said they think I am having a boy.  I agree, that is what I think too.  Ryan thinks it is a boy as well.  We will definitely be happy with either though.  We'll see if everyone is right!  If it is a boy, we already have a name picked out which would be a plus. But because we already have a name picked out for a boy, it makes me think it will be a girl sometimes because that is how it works, right?

Ryan flew to Dubai last night for work for the week.  It will be past midnight where he is after my appointment tomorrow.  He said he will be at a "Breaking Ramadon" party.  Apparently they don't drink in public there, so I am guessing it will be a lot of food and eating.

I'll keep y'all updated as soon as I find out the sex.

Stollers

So I registered last weekend at Babies R Us and it was not easy. I don't know how new mothers are supposed to know what they want and need. I mean, how many different brands and types of bottles are there? Thankfully my mom and Rachel helped or else I would have been completely lost. I am sure Ryan is thankful that he didn't have to tag along to help pick out which of this and which of that we want. I had to explain what most of it was when I was showing him what we registered for online. He got a kick out of the nipple and bottle cleaner until I made it clear that it is referring to cleaning the nipple of the bottle...

Right now I am struggling with strollers. I think I will get a car seat/stroller duo and a jogging stroller, there are just so many options that it is overwhelming. I think I need to go look at them in the store. People aren't kidding when they say kids aren't cheap.

I also registered at The Land of Nod. I picked out some bedding from there that I am excited about. The colors of the bedding are yellow and green and it is tree themed sorta.

Here are links to my registries:
